Establish that the issue falls within your remit

If outside your remit, refer to appropriate specialist support

If the issue falls within your remit, make suggestions as appropriate

Student is academically “at risk” - Director of Learning and Teaching (speed of referral is vital here)

Specific issues relating to module, course or academic, and regulatory matters must be referred to the Director of Learning and Teaching

Difficulties with an element of a module - Module Coordinator or lecturer

Students’ needing  specific learning support refer to Learner Support  ext 1906 or email learner-support@aber.ac.uk

Students’ requiring help with study practices refer to Study Practices and Academic Skills ext 1844

Difficulties with time management, general organisational skills, homesickness - refer to Signpost Mentoring for informal 1-to-1 peer mentoring ext 1890 or email signpost@aber.ac.uk

For students wanting information on working visas for employment during or after completion of studies, refer to the Careers Advisory Service ext 2378

Withdrawal - temporary or permanent

Establish that the issue falls within your remit

If outside your remit, refer to appropriate specialist support

If the issue falls within your remit, make suggestions as appropriate

Student may be concerned about their academic progress, or may feel that the course is not suitable.  Guidance on such matters is best placed within the department.

If the student has non-academic related issues, such as finance, or ill-health, refer in accordance with the ‘Financial Difficulty’ or ‘Personal / Emotional Difficulty’ categories

If the student is sure they are making the right decision, refer to Student Support ext 1761 for a ‘Withdrawal Form’.  This must be signed by the Head of Department, the Assistant Director of Student Support (or nominated person), and the Dean of Faculty.

If the student still feels that they would like to discuss this matter further refer to Student Support ext 1761 for an appointment.
