Pantycelyn

Pantycelyn Hall is designated as the University’s mixed Welsh Residence, where it is expected that there will be sufficient Welsh speakers to ensure that Welsh is the main language in daily use.

Location

Pantycelyn, opened in 1951, is a spacious and dignified building situated just below the main University Campus, slightly towards the town, on a site which it shares with the National Library of Wales. Many of the rooms command fine views of the town and the bay, which are less than ten minutes walk away.

Pantycelyn is within five minutes walk of:

  • most academic DepartmentsStudents enjoying the lawns around Pantycelyn
  • the University Libraries
  • the Students’ Union
  • Aberystwyth Arts Centre
  • the University Sports Centre
  • the National Library of Wales.

Communal Facilities

Some of Pantycelyn’s outstanding features are its communal areas, which include:

  • dining room – Ffreutur Pantycelyn
  • main lounge – used especially by the University’s Welsh societies
  • computer room
  • television room
  • launderette
  • amenity rooms
  • parking (limited numbers by permit).

Pantycelyn is the Bardic name of the great Welsh poet and hymn-writer William Williams; and Pantycelyn Hall is the residential expression of the University’s commitment to the language, culture and people of Wales.

Accommodation

Pantycelyn has the shape of a traditional University Hall of Residence, with larger than usual single, twin and bunk rooms opening off broad corridors which also give access to the Hall’s shared bathrooms. All bedrooms have connections to the University network and the Internet.

Catering

Pantycelyn is a catered Hall, in which the Accommodation Fees include a fixed charge to cover the cost of about one meal a day. It has its own excellent refectory, Ffreutur Pantycelyn; but the meal may be taken at any of the University’s award-winning restaurants.
