David Gendall

Course: BA History

Graduated: 2005/06 Academic Year

Destination approx. 6 months after graduation: Trainee Optician, Specsavers

Background

At A-level I studied Chemistry, History, Maths and Human Biology. Going to university seemed like the next logical step for me, as I thought that a degree would improve my job prospects. I visited Aberystwyth on an Open Day and it seemed like a very friendly, welcoming place. The town’s people were all extremely helpful and friendly. I was able to imagine being happy living and studying there.

Where are you now?

I am now working as an Optical Assistant for Specsavers. It is my job to meet and greet the customers on entry to the store. I book people in for appointments and complete basic administrative duties. I also play a role on the Health and Safety side and get the opportunity to work in the lab where I am involved in constructing glasses. I really like the atmosphere in my place of work as all the staff are extremely friendly. I also like the fact that my job helps the public.

How did you get there?

I saw this position advertised on a website and it captured my attention, so I decided to hand in my CV to the shop. I was asked back the next day for an interview and was shortly after offered the job. I believe that my Higher Education qualification definitely gave me the edge for the position. Also, my background in retail helped me to secure the job. I liked the idea of a customer related job, as I would consider myself a people person, but I also liked the sound of the scientific and lab side to the job too.

My degree definitely provided me with transferable skills which I currently apply to my job. I have learned to work to deadlines and to work effectively as part of a group. This helps me enormously as I now work very much as part of a team.

Whilst at UWA I was a regular participant in football games with my friends which I played several times a week. Through this I developed team skills and the ability to react to rapidly changing situations; it also built up my confidence.

Where are you going?

I view my current career as a stepping stone. I am looking forward to working my way up in my career. Already I have completed various training courses such as an Optical Assistant and Customer Service Relations course, and have gained recognised qualifications from these. I am learning new things all the time and am enjoying the challenges this presents.

What advice would you give to a student doing your subject at university now?

Don’t panic about finding a job after graduation. Take your time, use the Careers Service and explore your options. You don’t want to get stuck in a job that doesn’t make you happy. Remember that there are always more opportunities open to you than you think.
