Background

I did four A-levels, one of which was History. I chose to do History for my degree as it has always been a subject that interested me. I originally came to Aberystwyth on an Open Day for a look round the University and the town. I found it to be a welcoming, nice place. I also liked the fact that it is a fairly small place in comparison with big city universities, which I had no real interest in.

Where are you now?

I am currently working part-time as a Librarian and I am also doing an MA in Historical Studies – both at UWA.                          

In my job I help out at the library when needed; checking books in and out and stacking the shelves. My MA is an essay based course with lots of seminars. I really enjoy the research and learning aspects of my degree.

How did you get there?

I heard about the Librarian job through a friend. I wanted to do a Masters in order to further my education and ultimately end up completing a PhD. As I know both Aberystwyth and the History department it seemed natural to stay here. Studying in Aberystwyth has made me a more confident, outgoing and well-rounded individual. The way that the work on the History course is structured has contributed immensely to my self-motivation. Living away from home has made me independent and self-reliant and I have gained many essential life skills.

On the social front, I played golf and cricket for the University and I also played football in the Digs League. Doing extra-curricular activities shows that you have a range of interests and that you are sociable and can make friends and interact happily with a wide variety of people.

Where are you going?

I am hoping to do a PhD next year at De Montfort University in Leicester. After this I hope to either lecture in History or be involved in sports, either as a professional sportsman or as a sports writer.

What advice would you give to a student doing your subject at university now?

Just work hard and enjoy it.
