Course: BA History and Mathematics

Graduated: 2006/07 Academic Year

Destination approx. 6 months after graduation: Studying for a Masters in Theology, University of Wales, Lampeter

Background

I went to Pembroke School and studied History, Mathematics, IT and Physics in the sixth form there and decided to go to university to increase my opportunities in life with regard to employment.

I chose to combine Mathematics and History as I had enjoyed them both at school and wanted to continue my education in both areas. I attended a ‘summer university’ school at Aber and fell in love with the place. This was a sort of ‘taste university’ experience that was available to us as students of Pembroke School, and my mind was made up after this experience that I wanted to spend my university years at Aber – it was just the right distance from home for me, and the department and University itself had a good reputation.

Where are you now?

I am now studying for my Masters in Theology at the University of Wales, Lampeter. My course looks at the complete history of the church, from year zero through to current times. Therefore, a lot of material is covered and a lot of reading is required. However, I still enjoy it as the subject matter really interests me.

How did you get there?

I always wanted to do a Masters and from my first year at university I researched what subjects I could potentially do after graduation so that I could give myself something to aim for. That’s when I came across this course at Lampeter, and it kept cropping up as a real possibility as the content of study appealed to me greatly.

I left Aber with a good degree class and still have great friends from my time there. The broad nature of my degree at Aber ensured that I developed many skills over the years such as communication and numeracy, and didn’t only gain subject specific knowledge. I have come away from university with much more than just a degree in History and Mathematics; I am a good all rounder with plenty to offer future employers.

I was part of the choir at Aberystwyth and this allowed me to meet new people and gain confidence

Where are you going?

After finishing my Masters studies, I am looking at becoming a Primary School Teacher where I will hopefully get some real satisfaction from passing on interesting information and knowledge that I have obtained over the years.
