This Drama and English degree is one of the most popular of our Joint Honours schemes, in which you can study two subjects in equal depth. If you have studied both Drama and English previously, and want to pursue your interest in both subjects, then this degree in Drama and English is the one for you. If you are interested in teaching either or both of English and Drama at any level or to any age group, this combination of subjects will also be ideal.
As a student on the Aberystwyth Drama and English degree, you will be taught by tutors from two outstanding Departments.The Department of English Literature and Creative Writing was rated "Excellent" in the last Teaching Quality exercise, and has a particularly strong commitment to small group and workshop teaching. Drama and English Degree Course Structure
Year 1
In the first year of your Drama and English degree, you will study core modules in:
- Studying Theatre
- Text Workshop
- Encountering Texts
- Aspects of Genre
These modules lay the ground for all your further study, as you discover more about the fundamentals of each subject and begin to develop your own interests and skills. You will also begin to define your own focus by choosing from a range of Option Modules
Years 2+3
In Year 2 of English, you take three core modules:
- Reading Theory/Reading Text and two of:
- Medieval and Renaissance Writing
- Nineteenth Century Literature
- Restoration and Eighteenth Century Literature
- Twentieth Century British Literature
In Drama you take two core modules:
- Analysing Performance
- Key Theatre Practices
In the rest of year 2 and throughout year 3, the great majority of your time is spent on option modules which cover a huge range. You will choose your own preferences: from Improvisation to Theatre Design in Drama, and from Elizabethan Drama to Detective Fiction in English
Performance Opportunities for students of Drama and English
Aberystwyth University has a vibrant theatre scene, both from within the Department of Theatre, Television and Film Studies, and from the resident and visiting community and professional companies who use the excellent theatre facilities of the Aberystwyth Arts Centre on campus. Whatever aspect of theatrical performance you are interested in, onstage, backstage or front of house, you will have chance, both within your course and in student societies and community groups, to explore and develop your interests to the full.
