Education and English Literature degree

This degree in Education and English is one of the most popular of our Joint Honours degrees, in which you devote your time equally between two subjects. If you are considering a career in English Education, at any level, the Education and English degree may well be the one for you. As a student of the Aberystwyth degree in Education and English, you will divide your time between two outstanding Departments with long traditions of excellence in their respective fields. The School of Education and Lifelong Learning teaches one of Aberystwyth’s longstanding specialisms in the spectacular surroundings of the Old College on the seafront. The Department of English and Creative Writing, rated "Excellent" in the last Teaching Quality exercise, has a particularly strong commitment to small group and workshop teaching. Both departments have the highest reputation for the quality of the student experience which they offer you.

Education and English degree course structure

Year 1

In the first year of your degree in Education and English, you will study the following core modules, which lay the basis for all your future studies:

Education:

  • Policies and Issues in Education
  • Child Development
  • Young Children Learning

English:

  • Encountering Texts
  • Aspects of Genre

Years 2+3

In the second and third years of your degree in Education and English, there is greater flexibility, as you develop your skills and focus your interests:

Year 2 English:

  • Reading Theory/Reading Text and two from:
    • Medieval and Renaissance Writing
    • Nineteenth Century Literature
    • Restoration and Eighteenth Century Literature
    • Twentieth Century British Literature

Thereafter, there is a very wide range of option modules from which to choose.

Meanwhile in Education, you will continue to develop your knowledge base and skills, building towards a Major Dissertation on an Educational topic of your choice in the final year.

Career opportunities related to degree in Education and English

Many students on the Education and English degree begin with a fairly clear idea of the career path they wish to follow.
