English and Fine Art degree
This degree in English and Fine Art is one of the most popular of our Joint Honours degrees, in which you devote your time equally between two subjects. If you have previously studied English and Fine Art and would like to pursue your interest in both subjects, this degree may well be the one for you.
As a student of the Aberystwyth degree in English and Fine Art, you will divide your time between two outstanding Departments. The School of Art combines the very latest in Art technology and facilities with the resources of Beacon status Aberystwyth Arts Centre and the collections of the neighbouring National Library of Wales. The Department of English and Creative Writing is rated excellent for the quality of its teaching, with a particularly strong commitment to small group and workshop teaching. Both departments have the highest reputation for the quality of the student experience which they offer you.
English and Fine Art degree course structure
Year 1
In the first year of your degree in English and Fine Art, you will study the following core modules, which lay the basis for all your future studies:
English:
- Encountering Texts
- Aspects of Genre
Art:
- Current Issues in Art History and Visual Culture
- Graphic Representation
- Painting and Colour-based Representation
These are augmented with some option modules, which may even include some from another area of the Humanities
Years 2+3
In the second and third years of your degree in English and Fine Art, there is greater flexibility, as you develop your skills and focus your interests.
In English, you take:
- Reading Theory/Reading Text; and two from
- Medieval and Renaissance Writing
- Nineteenth Century Literature
- Restoration & Eighteenth Century Literature
- Twentieth Century British Literature
plus a number of options from a very wide range
In Art, there is a range of option modules, including a number of practical modules, which build towards the final year Graduate Exhibition, which is for many students the highlight of their Art studies.
