Foundation Degree
Foundation degrees are vocational qualifications in higher education aiming to bridge the gap between initial entry to higher education and honours degrees, whilst allowing progression to honours level.
For those wishing to follow a vocational route to degree level or those who wish to retrain for a career change, our foundation degree in Equine Studies is an excellent route to achieve your objectives. You will receive every encouragement to progress onto the BSc (Hons) degree scheme. This course will provide you with a sound practical and scientific knowledge base to underpin your career in the equine industry. Work experience is an important component of the course, giving you a first-hand opportunity to apply theory in a practical context.
Year 1
The first year provides an overview of the equine industry and introduces equine anatomy and performance science, and breeding and stud management. Horsemastership and equitation are also important components of the first year with the aim of developing a range of skills essential for the workplace. You are encouraged to train for BHS qualifications alongside their main studies.
Work Experience
The course’s vocational nature is reinforced by a structured period of work experience between the first and second years. This is an assessed part of the course and allows you to apply your knowledge in a practical context.
Year 2
The second year further develops your knowledge of applied equine science and equine business management. Core modules will include Equine Nutrition, Business and the Health and Behaviour of the Horse as well as modules that prepare you for the research skills to help bridge the gap to an honours degree. Optional modules include Equitation, Veterinary Science and Equine Event Management.
Progression to BSc
Successful completion of the foundation degree (with 75% of credits at merit level or above) enables you to progress onto BSc (Hons) Equine Studies (1-year top-up), or in certain circumstances to the final year of the BSc (Hons) Equine Science.
Career Opportunities
This course provides you with an excellent start to a career in the management of equine centres, such as studs, competition and racing stables or allied equine enterprises. This qualification may also lead to employment in the technical aspects of research and development, education and training.
