French (Single Honours/Joint Honours/Major/Minor) - 4 years

French degrees at Aberystwyth University

Degrees in French from Aberystwyth are available in three formats, with different subject weightings:

  • Joint Honours French degrees:
    • 50% French and 50% another language or subject
  • Major/Minor French degrees: either
    • 66% French and 33% another language or subject or
    • 33% French and 66% another language or subject

In each year of the French degree course, you take compulsory language modules. In addition you choose a number of optional modules, some thematic in character and some more traditionally chronological in approach. Modules in aspects of linguistics and in the language of current affairs and business are also available. In our French degrees, French language classes are taught in French, often by native speakers. Many take place in state-of-the-art language laboratories, and involve the use of an extensive range of audio cassettes, French TV programmes and CAL materials. French degree students have a range of content modules in culture, literature and linguistics from which to choose. Other options available include Business French.

Assignments include free composition, report writing, translating and oral presentations. Several native speakers teach French and you will have at least one class a week with them.

  • French and Spanish degree 50/50
  • French and German degree 50/50
  • French with Spanish degree 66/33
  • French with German degree 66/33
  • Spanish with French degree 66/33
  • German with French 66/33
  • Romance Languages degree (ie French Spanish and Italian in varying percentages)
  • European Languages degree (ie French, German, Spanish and Italian in varying percentages)
