German Degrees

German Degrees at Aberystwyth University

We give you three ways to study your German Degree:

German Joint Honours Degree
50% German and 50% another language or subject

German Major Honours Degree
66% German and 34% another language or subject

German Minor Honours Degree
34% German and 66% another language or subject

In the first year of the German degree course, you will take compulsory core language modules alongside a number of optional modules, some thematic in character and some more traditionally chronological in approach. In years 2+3, in addition to the written and oral language modules (compulsory at all levels) the German degree course offers an increasingly wide range of options in literature, sociolinguistics, German culture and, specifically, business German. The language work includes weekly meetings in small groups with a native speaker.

In addition to learning to converse more fluently in German, your German degree from Aberystwyth will also provide you with other useful skills such as learning how to give presentations and lead group discussions yourself. You will also learn about British-German cultural differences and will therefore be well placed to make the most of your stay in a German-speaking country in the third year.

Students who are interested in studying German culture more completely may be interested in the unique Aberystwyth Modern German Studies degree

I chose to study at Aberystwyth as I liked its location by the sea. It was very easy to settle in here as it’s a friendly place. It’s a small and beautiful town, with lots of pubs and places to go. At the Department of European Languages the tutors are very helpful and you can ask them for help anytime you need it. Also the University has all the academic facilities that students need to study, with its libraries and new computers. The cultural facilities such as the Arts Centre, theatres and cinemas here are good, and everyone can find something that they like. Aberystwyth provides a very student-friendly environment. The social life here is great and there is a good variety and plenty of places to go. I’ve already recommended Aberystwyth to others!
