As well as core modules in German language and German modern history, the Modern German Studies degree course includes modules on German linguistics, modern literature, film, politics and cultural studies. Modern German Studies: degree structure
Year 1
In the first year of your Modern German Studies degree, you take German language modules at the level appropriate to you, either Beginners or Advanced. You will also take a core module introducing you to the history of Germany. Optional modules give you the opportunity to locate German identity and culture in relation to the wider European culture of which it has been such a vital part.
Years 2+4
In Years 2+4 of your Modern German Studies degree, you will have the opportunity both to broaden your knowledge of recent German history and to focus in a more specialised way on the aspects of German culture which particularly interest you. The German contribution to European - and indeed global - Philosophy, Politics, Economics and History and Historiography is covered in an outstanding range of option modules from which you can choose.
Year 3
You will spend the third year of your Modern German Studies degree in Germany or another German-speaking country.
