International Politics and Military History degree at Aberystwyth

This International Politics and Military History degree is focused on understanding how the international political world has been shaped by nineteenth and twentieth century conceptions of military history. It will enable you investigate in depth what von Clausewitz called ‘the continuation of politics by other means’. In this degree in International Politics and Military History you will study the facts of military conflict and its evolution in the light of technological, social and political change. You will also study the intellectual history of the theory of war, its purpose and justification, its relation to economic and industrial power, the role of battle and the importance of leadership.  As a student on the International Politics and Military History degree at Aberystwyth you will consider examples of the conduct of war by nations and by sub-national groups - such as guerrillas, insurgencies and national liberation movements - from the Nineteenth Century to the present.

This subject has enormous currency: since 11 September 2001 many commentators feel that international politics has witnessed a reversion to earlier periods in military history, when the use of force as an ‘instrument of choice’ of states, as well as sub-state and non-state actors, for responding to disputes. This degree in International Politics and Military History will equip you to engage in vital areas of twenty-first century political debate and discussion.
