BSc Econ Business Information Management (UCAS code P103)
We live in a society which is characterised by its developing need to gain access to information. The designers and managers of information systems face tasks of growing responsibility and complexity. Rapid advances in internet technologies, and the wide availability of information of all types makes the understanding, accessibility and management of information all the more crucial in the 21st century.
The Business Information Management degree aims to produce well qualified graduates for a significant and growing part of the knowledge and information management sector. It will be of interest to students who are interested in the information profession and especially those wishing to follow a career in the corporate, commercial or public sectors, including business, health, finance, and government – as opposed to the more traditional library environments. This requires an understanding of the business context as well as knowledge and skills in the design, development and management of information systems in various types of organisations.
The majority of modules on the degree are taken in the Department of Information Studies, acquainting students with key areas in Information Management, both established and emerging. These include Knowledge Management, Business Information, Web Publishing, Digital Information, Records Management, Information Systems and Information Retrieval. In order to provide students with the wider contexts of the business environment and corporate sector, some modules are also taken in the School of Management and Business.
Students are encouraged to take a Year in Employment (YES) placement, an invaluable experience for Aberystwyth students, where they get the chance to spend a year working for a company between their second and third year. This gives students the chance to gain real-world experience and enhance their CVs. In their final year, all students undertake a Dissertation, further investigating and enhancing their knowledge of a specific area within Information Management / Information Studies.
The Department of Information Studies welcomes students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds.
