Undergraduate Psychology degrees at Aberystwyth
Psychology is the study of the human mind and human behaviour. Normal and abnormal human development, mental illness and psychological disorder, interpersonal and social interaction, the relationship between personality and culture, are all aspects of the intriguing complexities of human thought, action and interaction which you will study in Aberystwyth's Psychology degrees. Studying for your Psychology degree here, you can either take Psychology as a Single Honours subject, or as half of a Joint Honours programme, combined with another subject. The Single Honours scheme enables students to focus exclusively on theoretical and applied Psychology. The Joint Honours Psychology degree courses have been developed from first principles to synergise the strengths of psychology with the contributions of other University departments. They enable students to pursue another subject in which they are interested, but also to study the relationship between theoretical psychology and the rapidly growing number of areas in which the insights of psychology are now applied, from Genetics to International Politics.
These are relatively new degrees, so they are not yet accredited by the British Psychological Society for immediate progression to their recognised postgraduate qualifications. However, many other avenues for postgraduate study will be open to Psychology graduates, including BPS accredited conversion courses leading to Graduate Basis for Registration.
Learning & Support
Psychology is an evidence based discipline and you will develop a number of investigative and transferable skills under the guidance of lecturers who are actively engaged in research. Throughout your degree you will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars/tutorials and practical sessions which will include project work and problem-solving exercises. Teaching staff use a variety of contemporary learning techniques such as online learning and problem based learning to support the development of students’ understanding.
All modules are supported with electronic resources designed to enhance self-directed learning. During your studies you will have access to a range of learning materials including the comprehensive facilities of the National Library of Wales, which is adjacent to the campus. Assessment will be by examination and continuous assessment, allowing you to develop new skills and demonstrate your academic progress.
