Sport and Exercise Science

The Sport and Exercise Science degree at Aberystwyth provides a programme which offers a strong education in science along with the application of knowledge to practical situations. You will study the psychological, physiological and mechanical bases of sport and exercise and develop an understanding of how these are important across the range - from the sophisticated training regime of the elite sports competitor to the person who wants to exercise to keep healthy.

Sport and Exercise Science Degree Structure

The degree is modular and follows three themes:

  • Core scientific disciplines: Psychology; Physiology; Biomechanics. You will study all of these in the first two years; then you can choose in the final year from a broad range of specialist modules.
  • Applied studies: seminars; visiting lecturers; short two-week courses to develop a deep understanding of a topic of your choice. So if you are interested in a sport such as football, you can choose this and apply your knowledge to produce a portfolio on the Science of Soccer - or exercise and ageing, or studio classes, or netball or whatever. The choice is yours.
  • Research: modules in research methods, data handling; data analysis; leading to your final year Individual Research project - for many students the highlight of their Sport and Exercise Science degree..

Career Opportunities

A sport and exercise science degree opens up a wide range of prospects. There are opportunities in commercial health organisations, in elite sport, in exercise promotion and, following a PGDE, in teaching. The strong development of a scientific and analytical mind along with team-working skills means that graduates are also well-placed to enter other careers in management, sales and marketing, for example. Many students also enter non-sports careers with the degree proving an excellent, interesting and stimulating way to study science and gain a BSc.

Careers development is integrated into the course through the three years. All students complete a module of work experience and in the Applied Studies strand. You can gain two vocationally useful qualifications from a selection of coaching, fitness or studio awards, first aid, lifesaving etc.

If you lack qualifications for a place on the three year degree you could consider Life Sciences [C990] where successful completion of the foundation year can provide entry to the three year degree.
