Scenography and Theatre Design degree

This degree in Scenography and Theatre Design looks beyond the established boundaries of set, costume, lighting and sound design to take a total view of the performance space. The degree considers the organisation of this space is an artistic practice in its own right, taking account, but not limited by the conventions, of set, lighting and the other traditional theatrical disciplines. Through a combination of theoretical and practical explorations, the Aberystwyth Scenography and Theatre Design degree critically examines a wide range of contemporary practices from playhouse theatre to site-specific performance, from environmental theatre to performance installation. The focus of the degree in Scenography and Theatre Design is the development of your own design practice within or alongside the practice of theatre and performance.

The degree employs a range of innovative teaching methods and assessment assignments, including multi-media lecture/demonstrations and audio/video/mixed-media student submissions. At the end of the course you will have acquired a broad range of intellectual, practical and transferable skills applicable to a variety of careers within the creative media and beyond. You will also take with you a portfolio of work generated as both physical material and as a personal web site constructed and developed during the scheme. It is also intended that the experience provided by the degree should enable the development and enhancement of your individual way of seeing and practice of making.

Scenography and Theatre Design  is highly compatible with the Aberystwyth Performance Studies degree scheme or can be taken in exciting combinations with Drama, Film and Television Studies and other disciplines within the Faculty of Arts.

“I chose to study at Aberystwyth because no other university in the country does Scenography, like they do here. The department's brilliant, has great facilities, it's just amazing and all the staff are really approachable, and friendly. Also in the department is the centre for performance research here, and next to the campus is the National Library of Wales's Screen and Sound Archive. What I like best about studying at Aberystwyth is probably the night life. There's just always something to do, even though it's such a small town, which is really good. Whether you want to go out clubbing or just do something a bit quieter, it's all here. I would definitely recommend Aberystwyth to others. There's something here for everybody, no matter what society you want to join or sport you want to do, things like skiing, you never thought you'd be able to do in a place Aberystwyth, but there's still a club for it!”
