Aberystwyth has a long and honourable tradition of studies in Welsh language and literature as well as Celtic Studies in general. Here in 1875 was established the first of the chairs of Welsh in those colleges which were eventually to grow into the University of Wales. D Silvan Evans was our first Professor and he was succeeded by a series of brilliant scholars. As well as taking pride in its contribution to scholarship, reflected in its 5*A grade in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the Welsh Department is committed to maintaining and developing high teaching standards, and was awarded an 'Excellent' rating in the last Teaching Quality Assessment conducted by external assessors appointed by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.
