General Information

Mature Students

If you are over 21 you could gain admission to Aberystwyth as a mature aged student. We welcome such candidates because their high motivation and wide experience add an important dimension to our University community. Because of the exceptionally high quality of life and a number of other factors, Aberystwyth has proven particularly attractive to mature aged students. Indeed around 12% of our students are mature aged. Many mature students, without recent academic experience, are assessed for the purposes of entry on the basis of interview. The University contributes towards travelling expenses for this purpose.

Credit for Experience

We recognise that circumstances can often prevent people from gaining academic qualifications (O' Levels or GCSE's) early in life. We welcome applications from persons who have a wealth of experience which can help them to succeed at university. The Admissions Officer is always willing to offer advice and guidance about the necessary preparation for university work and the selection of appropriate courses.

Additional Assistance for Mature Students

When you enroll as a mature student at Aberystwyth you will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will ensure you receive advice on your academic work. You will also have an opportunity to meet the Director of Student Support who has specialist knowledge of the likely problems which may be faced by older students. There is also the mature students representative within the Students Union to provide support, information and social events.
