Students with special needs

Aberystwyth is pleased to consider applications for admission from students with special needs. You are advised, in your own interest, to consult the University before submitting a formal application through UCAS Level. Please contact the Disability Officer (01970) 628537 or email rha@aber.ac.uk giving details of the course or courses in which you are interested, the nature and extent of your disability or special needs, and any special equipment, teaching or residential services that may be necessary. A visit to Aberystwyth is recommended for all applicants with special needs but is essential if you have mobility difficulties. The design of our older buildings and the nature of the terrain (the campus is situated on a 11% gradient) does not provide a conducive physical environment for individuals whose mobility is impaired. Following your visit and discussion with members of staff, both you and the University will be able to judge whether it would be advisable for you to apply. If you are a UK student, you should contact your LEA about your entitlement to a Disabled Students Allowance in addition to any maintenance award you may receive.

The University provides specialist support for students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties at the Language and Learning Centre, where qualified staff are available for advice and guidance. Specialist software is available on the University computer network to improve access for those with specific learning difficulties. Designated areas ('green card' areas) within the main University libraries have been equipped with a range of equipment to help students with visual or hearing impairments. A copy of our Disability Statement is available from the Disability Officer (01970) 628537.

The Centre also hosts the Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow. Each year a professional writer is seconded to the University to work with students.
