In Aberystwyth Welsh is very much a living language, and a majority of the local population is bilingual. Under the terms of its Charter, the University regards both Welsh and English as its official languages, and one of its objectives is to give special attention to the educational needs of Wales, having regard to the Welsh language and the cultural and social traditions of Wales.
The ability to use Welsh as a medium of study and communication is widely regarded as being of educational value, and as an asset in a range of career opportunities within Wales. Vacancies are often advised for which a thorough knowledge of Welsh is essential, advantageous or desirable. In the wake of the 1993 Welsh Language Act and the establishment of the National Assembly for Wales following the 1998 Government of Wales Act, there is an increasing demand for more Welsh-speaking recruits to the teaching profession and also in the media, public and social administration, commerce and higher education.
The extent of Welsh-medium teaching varies from subject to subject. Not all the components of the degree schemes listed here are necessarily available through Welsh and the exact nature and medium of the provision should be confirmed upon discussion with representatives from individual departments. In some departments, a full programme of studies is available in Welsh; in other subjects, only part of the provision will be available through Welsh, its extent depending largely on the specialisms of those teaching through the medium of the language.
In some subjects or modules taught mainly in English, bilingual students may be able to attend seminars and tutorials in Welsh. And all our students will have the right to submit coursework and to sit examinations in Welsh, even if they are studying courses whose language of instruction is English. Many of the Welsh-medium modules available run parallel with those available in English and students are free to choose which modules, and how many, they wish to study through the medium of Welsh or English. A significant number of learners of the language take Welsh-medium modules in addition to those whose first language is Welsh. Learners, who take Part 1 Beginners Welsh modules in their first year, then go on to register, in the second year of their 4 year scheme, for the Welsh (second language) scheme plus a Welsh-medium module in another subject which help them improve their application to the language.
