General Information

What qualifications does Aberystwyth accept?

Minimum Requirement

Aberystwyth expects a general level of aptitude in level three qualifications for applicants who are under 21 years of age in the September of the year of entry. We shall accept 2 A levels or equivalent to meet the general minimum requirement to include any specific course requirements for entry to Honours degrees. In certain cases, four AS levels and one A level (or equivalent) would be acceptable for Honours degrees subject to interview or further evidence of motivation and potential.

AS Qualifications

Aberystwyth welcomes the prospect of more students pursuing AS levels and the greater breadth that they should achieve. We accept the AS as a valuable qualification in its own right. A level applicants with good AS levels will inevitably be at a competitive advantage, but applicants who have underachieved at AS levels or with no AS levels will continue to receive full and serious consideration at the offer-making stage. A poor AS performance may be ignored, if there is a compensating indication of improving potential.

AS levels will be welcome whether they are in ‘contrasting' or ‘complementary' subjects to the degree or HND scheme proposed.

Key Skills

The Application of Number at level 3 will be accepted by the Institute of Biological Sciences and the Institute of Rural Sciences as an adequate substitute for GCSE Maths. An A* to C pass in GCSE English or Welsh continues to be an institutional requirement, but in certain cases Key Skills Communication at level 3 will be acceptable in lieu of GCSE English or Welsh. Key Skills at level 3 if offered, will be included in offers and given appropriate weighting in line with the UCAS National Tariff. Please contact the Head of Admissions for advice (01970 622019).

Welsh Baccalaurete

Aberystwyth welcomes the new Welsh Baccalaureate as a valuable qualification in its own right and fully supports the inclusion of the WBQ Core in the UCAS tariff (120 points). In recognition of the additional breadth and range of skills offered by the whole qualification, we may be prepared to give a slightly reduced offer to Welsh Baccalaureate candidates, provided any course requirements are met. The achievement of the Core will normally be sufficient for entry to HND and Foundation Degree schemes.
