Science Circuit

Science Circuit Phase II

The 'Skilling the Future' programme endeavours to work with schools and colleges in Ceredigion (with the support of the 14-19 Learning Pathways Network) and Powys, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. We can also offer short sessions to other community groups, villages and learning networks in many areas of science and technology.

For schools, we aim to provide additionality to the science curriculum as well as support in other areas of the curriculum. And the best bit – all free to local schools. We can site our science trailer in an area of your grounds and deliver a range of science, sustainability, conservation and other sessions to fit in with your timetable.

The trailer is approx. 5.5m wide and 17m long (including entrance ramp). It has an external generator for power – or, if it is to be situated near school buildings, has an external hook up system for power which can be a quieter and safer alternative. The trailer will take 14-16 pupils per session.

We can offer a selection of some of the following:

  • Conservation – based on a case study of land use conflicts
  • Renewable energy – overview of the science behind various systems (including models)
  • Basic geology – including rocks in hand specimen
  • Forensic science – applying science to crime (various aspects)
  • Science behind Body Language and non-verbal expression (useful for older students preparing for interviews etc.)
  • Why go to University? talks  - how it works, what kinds of courses you could do, how to get more information
  • Sessions on particular areas of science in the curriculum on which students could do with a ‘top up’ session (e.g. DNA analysis and genetic fingerprinting)
  • Any other suggestions will be looked at sympathetically!!

Evolution Megalab

This exciting project, led by the Open University, to research predation, climate change and evolutionary change had been launched in the DARWIN 200 year - and Aberystwyth University is pleased to have been able to make the website and worksheets available to the world in the Welsh Language!

Science Circuit Phase I

Science Circuit originally ran from February 2005 to February 2008, working with adults in Ceredigion, primarily new to science education. Particularly those who were

  • unemployed or looking for work in areas such as conservation, food technology, sustainable energy or health
  • wanting to be better informed about debates such as GM, wind energy or DNA technology
  • wanting to better understand the science children learn at school
  • new to science and wanted to learn more, and
  • community or voluntary groups who might benefit from science related training

Funded by Aberystwyth University and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) - helping to reduce the gap in development between the community's regions.
