Taste of University Life
This project provides an opportunity for pupils in years 8-13 to visit and get to learn about university life. It is available for all schools but with priority given to those schools with a high proportion of pupils from Community First areas. Pupils undertake workshops within university departments designed to provide ‘hands-on’ experience tailored to their age group, sample the food in one of the university restaurants and meet undergraduates from various different departments. A variety of additional presentations on student finance, why go to university/ etc can also be incorporated.
Visits may be hosted by the Centre or Schools Liaison (particulary Year 12 pupils)
Quotes from a visits
"The talk on Why go to University was very good; it has changed my mind on what University is about. Before I thought it was just for really clever people who got all A*s at GCSE; now I understand that as long as you have enough of the correct grades for your chosen course you can apply for it also. It was a really good trip. I enjoyed it greatly, and from what my friends said, I believe they did to." MP, aged 14
"Thanks again for all of the hard work of both you and your team for our 'Taste of University Life' at the end of last month. The pupils really enjoyed the visit and got a lot out of it. The feedback from schools has been amazing, the children have been saying that it was the best week of their lives and they are all coming to Aber to study now. On a personal level I have always enjoyed our trips to Aberystwyth and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your commitment to making things run so smoothly and ensuring that the pupils achieve as much as they do. It has been a pleasure to work with you." Jenni Rankin Mills, Aim Higher, Halton visit 26 - 29th April 2011
