Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

We work with the Royal Society of Chemistry to provide a unique chemistry resource for A-level Chemistry students.

The RSC's Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) gives school and college students the chance to learn about spectroscopy through a hands-on workshop. As well as covering the principles of spectroscopic techniques, the activities use real-life contexts to demonstrate the applications of the techniques.

Delivered by Aberystwyth University staff, postgraduate and undergraduate university students, the workshops also have an emphasis on encouraging school pupils to consider studying chemistry and the career opportunities available.

A normal SIAS workshop includes an activity which will take approximately up to 1½ hours involving FT-IR Spectrometers. The workshop work really aids the understanding of Organic Chemistry and is directly relevant to the AS and A level Syllabus

The equipment is also available on a short-term loan basis. This scheme continues to expand provision of our STEM Programme.

  • We bring the workshop to your school/college at no cost to the school
  • We integrate with the timetable
  • We cover a practical part of the syllabus that pupils would not be able to explore
  • Contact with undergraduates can have an inspirational effect.
