In the first year of your studies you take 120 credits’ worth of level-one modules. If you wish to study German to degree level (or at least keep that option open) you must take the core language module (GE19930) and then choose at least one additional module.
The options include Ways of Reading German Literature (GE10910), Language, Culture and Identity in Europe (EL10820) Language in Society (EL10610) and Images of Europe (EL10920). Assuming you pass Part One satisfactorily, you can then proceed to Honours German, with a range of degree schemes: Single Honours Modern German Studies, Joint Honours German (typically 50% German plus 50% of another subject in the Arts Faculty or outside it), German as part of the Modern Languages with Business Studies (MLBS) degree scheme (two language plus Business Studies), or German as a major component (usually 80 credits) of a degree scheme or as a minor component (usually 40 credits) of a degree scheme. Full details of permitted major/minor combinations with German are in the University Prospectus.

German can also be studied as part of a degree in Law.

Finally, there is the option of taking German as part of the Single Honours degree in European Languages (R900), a three-language degree scheme (see also the Degree Schemes Database).

In the Honours (Part 2) years, at Level 2 (second year) and Level 3 (final year), in addition once more to the compulsory language module (GE20130/GE30130 combining oral and written skills), there is a range of literary, linguistic and cultural modules ranging from Language and Society in the German-speaking Countries to From Fiction to Film, and from Language of Politics to Rebels in German Literature and Film. Between years 2 and 3 you will spend a year abroad, part or all of it in a German-speaking country, usually as an assistant teaching English in a school, as a student at a university, or working.
