I think it is fair to say that the conference “Our Inner Animal and the Theories of Creativity”, organized by the Department of European Languages of Aberystwyth University and supported by the Aberystwyth University Research Fund and The Society for French Studies, was a major success. All papers were of a very high standard. The participants, from as far afield as Canada, Portugal, Britain and France, offered in-depth studies which gave an overall impression of remarkable cohesiveness if one takes into account the great variety of disciplines to which the theme of research was applied. Indeed, the papers covered many aspects of the visuals arts - film, dance, sculpture and photography - as well as philosophy, francophone and Anglophone novels and poetry. Cumulatively, these clearly demonstrated that the question of animal representation incorporates a vast array of perspectives, both contemporary and deeply anchored in the European and Classical tradition, which shed new lights on the mechanisms of artistic production. The round table discussion that closed the event provided a particularly useful and illuminating synthesis of these perspectives, as well as demonstrating the potential for future research projects or follow-ups to research already begun. There is no doubt that the publication of the conference proceedings will prove further the importance of this theme of research within the more general academic framework lying at the crossroads between eco-criticism and theories of artistic creativity.

Je crois qu’il est juste de dire que le colloque « Notre Animal intérieur et les Théories de la Créativité » organisé par le Department of European Languages, Aberystwyth University avec la contribution de l'Aberystwyth University Research Fund et de la Society for French Studies, a été un franc succès. Toutes les interventions étaient de haut niveau, présentant des études approfondies et d’une remarquable cohérence compte tenu de la variété des domaines d’applications du thème de recherche. Effectivement les sujets abordés, traitant tout aussi bien de cinéma, de danse, de sculpture et photographie que de philosophie, roman français et étranger, poésie, ont amplement montré que la question de la représentation animale offrait une vaste gamme de perspectives à la fois innovatrices et profondément ancrées dans la tradition culturelle européenne et classique pour éclairer les mécanismes inhérents à la création artistique. La table ronde qui a clôturé l’événement a été particulièrement utile pour faire le bilan de la rencontre, opérer une synthèse des propositions et envisager un suivi ou un prolongement des recherches déjà entamées. La publication des actes du colloque apportera à n’en pas douter d’autres preuves de l’importance d’une telle topique dans le cadre des études universitaires contemporaines au confluent de l’éco-critique et des théories de la production artistique.
