        Introduction

This module is part of the inter-departmental MA in Television Studies. The first module will be compulsory for all students as an introduction to the basic skills of television production. The second module, which is taught in the second semester, will be optional and will give interested students the opportunity to develop their own work.

Module One introduces the students to the practical challenges and difficulties of directing work on screen. The differences inherent in video and Film will be explored by looking at work produced on 16mm film and on video Super 8. The student will be introduced to studio work and to multi-camera situations and will also be introduced to the skills and creativity inherent in editing.

In Module Two, students will be assisted to plan, provide a story board, film and edit a short piece of not more than 10 minutes duration on video. The aim of the course will be to introduce the students at first hand to the skills necessary in filming and editing but also to make them aware of the organisation and forward planning necessary to provide for good results. Students can provide a video tinder one of two headings a) experimental and b) documentary. Should the Department receive, as it does on some occasions, an invitation to provide a short work for groups such as the Samaritans, Coastguards or Medical Teaching, students will also be able to work within a larger group provided that individual responsibilities and effortcan be clearly assessed.
