        Examined Post-Course Assignment

Note that the form and content of the examined post-course assignment are provisional until confirmed at the workshop itself.

The planned assignment is to compare and contrast the websites for two comparable products or brands. The key difference must be that one website primarily targets males whilst the other primarily targets females. An example might be the website of a magazine mainly for men and the website of a magazine mainly for women.

Last year the assignment had to be submitted in the first week of October, but the submission date will be announced at the workshop itself.

You may produce your assignment either in the form of...

        • an essay or report, or
        • your own webpages

Last year most students chose to submit their assignment in the form of an essay or report. A few chose to produce the same assignment in the form of their own webpages (put online for them by the AUEB technical support staff).

Note the importance of demonstrating relevant reading (normally at least 6 academic sources, including some online references). You may find it useful to check out the guidelines I give to students in the UK for writing essays. Include a Contents Page and label all illustrations (Figure 1, etc.).

As a guide to what is expected in the examined assignment you may like to read this essay produced by a former AUEB student on this course (although note that last year's assignment was not about the male/female targeting issue.

It would be wise to include in your comparison factors such as:

        • fonts
        • colours
        • visual metaphors
        • text-image ratio
        • page layout
        • site layout
        • interactivity

You are encouraged to consider other factors also.

As a guide to what I am looking for, here are the feedback forms I use for...

        • essays and reports
        • webpages
