a) Type a search word or words in the search box. Choose distinctive terms or phrases which are likely to occur
only in the context of relevant material. Note that:
searches are not case-sensitive ('Dan' includes 'dan').
stemming is used ('Dan' includes 'Daniel').
punctuation marks are ignored.
b) Set the type of search thus:
all the words lists items that contain all of the words you typed (not necessarily in the same
order). This is a 'Boolean AND search': it narrows your search. Since authors' names may be
listed surname first (e.g. 'Barthes, Roland'), search for them using this setting.
any of the words lists items that contain any one of the words you typed. This is a 'Boolean OR search':
it broadens your search.
exact phrase lists items that contain your search phrase (includes words like 'and' and 'the').
Don't include quotation-marks.
c) Define the target using the radio buttons thus:
directory: this is the default search for terms used in the titles of items
(and the names of authors) listed in all sections of the MCS directory.
documents: this is a search of the whole
text of each document stored locally on the MCS website.
