Enabling objectives:

After studying this module you should be able to:

appreciate the diversity of EIA procedures in different parts of the world;

describe how funding agencies can use EIA to take account of the environment in countries to which they are supplying aid;

describe the content of the world's first EIA legislation (the National Environmental Policy Act, 1969 in the United States), and the obligations it imposes;

describe the content of selected EIA procedures from funding agencies and from countries around the world;

identify the important parts of legislation from countries around the world in terms of the obligations they impose for the various stages of the EIA process;

identify the strengths and weaknesses in the selected EIA procedures from around the world.

Terminal objective :

To understand how EIA works in a variety of different countries and within funding agencies, and to see how these procedures have been influenced by preceding legislation, especially NEPA (1969).
