Enabling objectives :

After studying this module you should be able to:

understand how the membership of the European Union affects environmental law provision in the UK

understand the background to the legal system and describe the structure of the courts system in the United Kingdom and what happens when appeals are made against decisions in the United Kingdom;
describe the legal system in the United Kingdom for protecting the air environment from pollution;

describe the legal system in the United Kingdom for protecting the water environment from pollution;

describe the legal system in the United Kingdom for controlling the handling and deposit of waste;

describe how integrated pollution control works to control the pollution of all three media of air, water and land;

understand and describe the case history which has developed around the use of Environmental Impact Assessment in Japan.

Terminal objective :

To understand the legal controls that exist in this country to protect the three environmental media of air, water and land; and to understand the historical background to their development.

Aims and objectives
The main aim of this module is to provide you with an understanding of environmental law in the UK. To fulfil this objective, we shall initially examine the way in which the UK's membership of the European Union influences the formulation of environmental law and how European pressure has lead to a change in the way this law is implemented. We shall then study existing environmental law in the UK on air, water, land and industrial hazard.
