Aims
This third year semester 2 module introduces students to some of the main elements of industrial policy and their practice internationally. It also covers the theory and practice of competition policy together with an examination of regulatory issues. While most topics are presented in formal lectures, complemented by class discussions, a few are covered by 'directed reading'. This mixture provides students with a range of teaching and learning experiences.

Learning outcomes
On completing the module students will:

• understand the purpose, and main elements, of industrial policy;

• understand the developmental role of the state;

• understand the need for, and practice of, innovation/technology policy;

• be familiar with the debate concerning, and experiences of, national economic strategies;

• understand when and why policy intervention to promote competition and regulate dominant forms may be required and the theoretical foundations for, and design of, appropriate policies;

• understand the issues and problems arising in the implementation of competition and regulatory policy;

• understand the basic motives for, and forms of, privatisation programmes and possess knowledge of the post-privatisation experiences of at least two UK sectors;
