Brief description
This course will aim to familiarise students with the debates centring upon the problematic of Modernism. Studying a selection of "high" modernist authors (ie Joyce, Eliot, Woolf, Pound, Lawrence, Stein, Yeats, HD), the course will consider the following issues: the politics of avant-garde art; why 'modernism' is regarded as 'radical' or 'reactionary'; why certain canon formations have taken place.
