Brief description
The process of making writing that's worth reading is never easy. In this module we will be thinking about writing as process rather than as product. Concentrating on writers who learned from each other over a specific historical period we will be looking at the underside of the written carpet and at the secondary material that often surrounds literary texts: diaries, letters, notebooks, drafts, unpublished versions as well as the published text itself. Writing is a craft, with its own traditions, secrets and techniques - a mystery in the old sense of a trade tht can be learned and in the more usual sense of an unfathomable puzzle. We shall therefore be considering writing methods and the theory and politics of making writing from a very practical perspective.
