Assessment Exam   2 Hours Written examination. Four essay questions, complete two within a 2 hour examination. Resit will consist of a 2 hour examination of the same form.   100%  

Module Outline (Lecture Themes)
The nature of rural areas and their recomposition in demographic, social and economic terms is examined through a discussion of the following themes:

Module Aims
To explore the new geographies created through the changing experience of traditional residents, the impact of the 'new middle class' and the development strategies proposed for rural regions in a British and European context.

Module objectives / Learning outcomes
The module enables participants to:

a) Describe and critically evaluate the process of restructuring in rural areas

b) Be aware of the various strategies adopted by policy makers to promote change and development in rural areas

c) Acquire knowledge and understanding of work undertaken by geographers and other social scientists in this field

d) Appreciate the range of data sources and methods used for studying rural change, and to develop critical reading, interpretation and evaluation of current practice
