Brief description
The aim of the module is to explore the scope of historical enquiry in its fullest breadth and depth by covering a long period and one of the central concerns of historical writing since its development in Antiquity. This will be done through a selective and critical approach to periods and themes rather than by offering a 'grand narrative'. The lecture topics will be organised in a broadly chronological sequence to provide students with a recognisable and reassuring overall intellectual environment rather than to imply any long-term process of development or progress in the history of warfare and society.
