Module description
To benefit from and contribute to European citizenship it is vital that the influence that the EU has on life and work are understood. The EU is increasingly an important influence in creating change in the land based industries. Future opportunities and threats must be considered in order to achieve effective decision making.

Outcomes
Outcome 1

Identify the structure, composition and function of the EU.

Performance criteria:
a. Main organisational structure and function of the EU is described.
b. Main aims and provisions of major EU treaties are identified.
c. Major policies are described.

Ranges:
Organisational Structure - European Commission, European Parliament, European Council, European Court of Justice, Council of Ministers, Court of Auditors, Committee of the Regions.
Organisational Functions - Budget, Decision making, Legislative, Overseas aid, Finance.
Major treaties - Rome, Single European Act, Maastricht and subsequent treaties, EMU.
Major policies - CAP, Regional, Environmental.
Impacts - Four Freedoms: goods, people, services, capital.

Identify the lifestyle and geographical characteristics of selected European Countries.

Performance criteria:
a. Education, training and employment are investigated.
b. Culture and customs are identified.
c. Influence of the EU on lifestyle in selected European country is assessed.

Education, training and employment - Course structures, qualifications, working conditions, income and benefits, career structure.
Social, justice and home affairs - Medical care, benefits, judicial system.
Culture - Lifestyles, housing, religion, language, food, leisure, social interaction.
