Aims of the module
The module examines a range of techniques for assessing, evaluating and managing British landscapes. Emphasis is put on student participation, in order for a critical approach to be developed in addition to practical management skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

i) evaluate different methodologies in landscape assessment

ii) demonstrate practical and applied skills in assessing landscapes

iii) apply these skills to the planning and management of landscapes

iv) identify means of protecting/managing landscapes

Syllabus / Curriculum design
The module will develop student's knowledge of the subject area through a variety of lectures, practicals, visits and seminars. Class participation is an important component in order to develop discussions and the exchange of ideas. The development of transferable skills is encouraged, and in particular teamwork skills and problem solving.

The broad areas that are covered are: Components of a landscape assessment, visual impact assessment, practical case study; classification and evaluation of a landscape; management and protection of historic landscapes.
