Aims of the module
The module develops key aspects of the first year module RS11810. Four broad areas will be examined with themes from each of these sections being drawn together in the seminars and practicals. The four subject areas to be covered are :

Sustainable forestry and UK forest policy mechanisms
New native woodlands
Silvicultural management and continuous cover forestry in Britain
Finance, planning and costing of woodland investments.

Learning outcomes
Students should, by the end of the module be able to :

1. Evaluate the opportunities and costs of owning and managing a woodland.

2. Prepare a detailed species plan of a new woodland for a given objective.

3. Assess the impact of global forest policies in the UK.

4. Analyse the management techniques employed in selected silvicultural systems.

The module will develop students' knowledge of the subject area through a variety of lectures, practicals and visits.
