This module investigates the theory, implementation and impacts of sustainability within a British context. The countryside is chosen as the focus of the module and is examined with respect to social, economic and environmental considerations. This is an integrative module which should appeal to final year students of biology, geography and rural studies.
Brief description
This module assesses the potential for a sustainable British countryside. Politicians, countryside agencies, the planning system and specific countryside projects all now purport to endorse sustainable development. This is critically examined and assessed utilizing contemporary economic, social and environmental research with respect to the theory and practice of sustainable development.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Evaluate the principal discourses associated with sustainable development
2. Assess the efficacy and relevance of sustainable development to countryside issues and agendas
3. Evaluate the implementation of sustainable development in theory and practice
