Brief description
Hispanic Literature offers a broad introduction to Spanish culture via the study of key themes and perennial topics, several of which are related to the civilization context studied in the semester 1 module. These topics include: The Ballads of the Reconquest, The Picaresque Novel, The Mystics of Spain and Costumbrismo.

Material covering the first two-thirds of the module is provided in a bilingual booklet while a further three set texts are studied in greater detail: the contemporary Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Cronica de una muerte anunciada. Garcia Lorca's celebrated Romancero gitano, and the modern classic on the Spanish Civil War, Ramon Sender's Requiem por un campesino espanol.

The class meets for weekly lectures and for regular seminars. Assessment is by one term essay on Garcia Marquez and a two hour examination.
