Aims of the module
Hispanic Civilization provides a foundation knowledge and enriches the context in which the language is learnt. It concentrates on key phases in Spanish and Spanish-American history: The Reconquest of Spain, The Hapsburg Kings, The Conquest of Mexico, The Defeat of the Spanish Armada, Latin-American dictators and the origins of the Spanish Civil War.

The course also considers the work of three major painters (with slides): El Greco, Goya and Velazquez.

In addition, two modern works are considered in detail: the film Tristana (with subtitles) by the famous director Luis Bunuel, which is a mordant comment on the traditional role of women in Spanish society; and the film 'Land and Freedom' by the British director Ken Loach, which offers a powerful and emotive analysis of the Spanish Civil War.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have

1) a knowledge of key features in Spanish history from the Reconquest to the Civil War plus a knowledge of three Spanish painters.
2) specific knowledge of two Spanish films and their contexts.
