Aims
- to develop a cache of analytical terms which film-makers utilise in order for their films to make cognitive sense, including image, mise-en-scene, editing, the star system, genre, and sound
- to begin to develop a critical awareness of some of the theories that film-makers avail themselves of in order for their films to make cognitive sense.
Learning Outcomes:
Typically, upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
- command the basic terminology of film studies in terms of how films are put together in order for meaning to be created;
- generate theoretical applications of some basic film theories which film-makers use in order to intentionally create meaning in their films.
Content:
Lecture/seminar topics include considerations of `the shot?, mise-en-scene, sound, semiotics, montage, genre, gender, worldview, and phenomenology.
