Brief description
The module introduces students to the fundamentals of research, scholarly writing, and study skills in preparation for AH32020 Dissertation and in order to improve essay writing generally. The course will include workshops and visits to the Hugh Owen and National Libraries. It will be assessed by a disseration proposal and bibliography where possible supported by the intending dissertation supervisor.
Aims:
The module aims to:

provide a foundation for AH32020 Dissertation and training in advanced essay writing at Levels 2 and 3
-
demonstrate how to pose a research question and delimit the scope of a subject
-
illustrate ways of dealing with a topic or subject
-
explain the necessity, compilation, and application of a bibliography
-
define concepts such as primary and secondary sources and research
-
inform good writing style
-
instruct in the dividing of the dissertation into sub-sections and components
-
present principles of good presentation (in writing and orally)
-
explain by example specific research methodologies
-
discuss the nature of an essay and dissertation
-
instruct in those aspects of research methodology, writing, and preparation that are common to all students irrespective of the subject matter of the dissertation
-
provide a forum to discuss problems and solutions that are common to all students regardless of the subject matter of their dissertation
-
introduce electronic and paper-based sources of information
-
introduce word-processing skills appropriate to essay and dissertation writing at this level
-
initiate the first (rough) draft of the dissertation
-
elucidate the role of the supervisor and the student’s role in supervision
-
introduce time-management models for planning the development and meeting deadlines for essays and dissertations
Objectives:
By the end of the module the student will possess:

a written proposal outlining the subject or research problem and strategy for the dissertation

a bibliography that is orderly, pertinent and useful to the above
-
ability to access various data base and library sources
-
word-processing skills sufficient to present the initial proposal
-
awareness of the expectations and demands of a dissertation and essay writing at Levels 2 and 3
-
awareness of the roles, responsibilities, and relationship of student and supervisor
-
understanding of a number of possible approaches to research and ways of dealing with a subject or topic
-
cognisance of the nature of innovative research
-
ability to present ideas in a clear, logical, and orderly manner
-
knowledge to submit the dissertation in a professional manner
-
the beginning of an initial (rough) draft of the dissertation
