Brief description

The module introduces students to some of the current debates around gender, post-colonialism and minority identity. It will consider examples from Africa, Latin America and Black and Feminist artists from the USA and Britain

Aims:

The module aims to:

examine selected topics and artists from the twentieth century whose work has addressed issues of gender and identity.
introduce students to some of the current debates around gender, post-colonialism and representation and examine in detail the work of selected artists.

Objectives:

The student will be able to:

identify the major debates around issues of gender and identity.
the student will be able to analyse images in relation to current debates around gender and identity.
the student will develop expertise in note-taking, reading critically, library research, essay writing and the presentation of ideas in class discussion.
