Brief description
The curriculum of Photography 1 plus: special projects in photography. Teaching is by tutorials with the emphasis on the use of methods and materials and the acquisition of techniques and the practicalities of exhibiting.
Aims:
-
provide the groundwork for the student to begin to competently and confidently approach image capture and reproduction.
-
encourage and guide the student in creative photographic applications through set briefs, workshops and tutorials.
-
reveal the possibilities of photography as a medium of document, reference and creative imaging.
-
introduce an extended aesthetic appreciation of the medium.
-
encourage a greater independence and decision-making in relation to creativity.
-
encourage a greater involvement in the area of photography at all levels.
-
work towards creating a portfolio of prints of a sound technical, individual and progressive nature.
Objectives:
-
demonstrate an awareness of the basic techniques of black and white photography including : -
using 35mm cameras
properties of black and white films
processing film.
-
demonstrate an awareness of fundamental darkroom/printing procedures including : -
contrast control
exposure control
cropping and degree of enlargement
burning in, dodging and shading
montage/double exposure
properties of resin coated papers
paper processing procedures
basic toning procedures

demonstrate the use of studio/artificial light in basic lighting arrangements.

begin to define the nature of the photographic image in relation to : -
a) a given theme
b) characteristics of process and its contribution to consequent image

the use of working through : - a) observed photography
b) directed photography

the use of fibre-based papers and processing procedures.

the use of working with colour film.

an investigation of a given theme in greater depth with consideration given to approach, techniques used, subject matter and reasons for choice.

compile a portfolio of prints on a chosen theme
