Brief description


This module examines the development of American society and culture from the colonial period to the end of the nineteenth century, through a linked study of key historical topics and representative literary texts. Focusing on the making of national identity, we look at westward expansion, the creation of the American Republic, and other aspects of national history including slavery and the Civil War.

Learning outcomes


At the end of the module, students will be able to:


- Exercise the developing skill of close critical reading of texts
- Articulate an understanding of the social and political contexts in which the set texts were written
- Write about the subject in a well-structured and well-argued way
- Demonstrate developing skills in oral presentation
