Brief description

This module has both a theoretical and a practical basis. It is intended to develop an understanding of issues related to language learning and language acquisition. It is also intended to give practical experience in teaching English as a foreign language. In these ways it provides training in teaching English as a foreign language and gives access to a recognized teaching qualification.

The format of this module is as follows: 2x2 hour sessions per week. The sessions are not formal lectures but include discussion and practical involvement in teaching strategies. There will also be observation of experienced teachers; some of the observations may take place during the two hour sessions. The module involves practical teaching with classes of foreign students. These classes are outside module hours.

Students who complete the module successfully may apply to sit the examination for the Certificate of Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults. An examination fee is payable for this.
