Brief description

The module is structured thematically and chronologically, although sometimes the need for thematic comparison will override a strictly linear approach. The module will begin with an introductory session on some important theoretical issues associated with reading detective and crime fiction. The theoretical perspective will be continued throughout the module with further reading suggested before each seminar. The first few weeks will concentrate on classic nineteenth-century examples of the genre. We will then address the main styles of detective and crime writing in the twentieth century and will end with a consideration of the role of women as crime writers and fictional detectives.
